- About Us | St Ferdinand Chicago
About Us The Saint Ferdinand Catholic Community is dedicated to our patron Saint Ferdinand of Castile (c. 1199 -1252). A wise ruler and an excellent administrator. Saint Ferdinand became the king of Castile at the age of 18, and then, after the death of his father, assumed the kingship of Laon, where he governed for 35 years. He died on May 30 and was buried in the habit of a friar minor at the Cathedral of Seville. He was canonized in 1671. During his life, Saint Ferdinand lead and defended his people, built up the Church, and achieved peace among various factions. His life and work serves as a daily reminder to us to be united with one another in building up the Kingdom of God here on the northwest side of Chicago. Saint Ferdinand is the patron saint of soldiers. At the conclusion of our parish's 75th Anniversary, a statue of our patron was commissioned and dedicated. The Saint Ferdinand Statue and Garden are located on Mason Avenue at the northwest side of our parish property. St. Ferdinand is made up of numerous ethnic groups, each with its own unique culture and traditions. We believe diversity should be celebrated by highlighting each group and its own special identity. Over the years we have been able to provide a growing number of activities and programs to celebrate both the diversity of our parish families and the unity in our faith. Currently, we celebrate eight Masses each weekend in two languages - English and Polish. Our Priests Fr. Peter Gnoinski Pastor pgnoinski@saintferdinand.org Fr. Lukasz Górzyński Associate Pastor Fr. - Liturgical Ministries | St Ferdinand Chicago
Liturgical Ministries Altar Servers Altar Servers assist the priest at Mass and other liturgies. They are responsible for maintaining a smooth flow of the liturgy by making sure that all that is needed for the celebration of the liturgy is available. The Altar Servers provide an invaluable service to the worshiping community. Altar Servers are recruited from St. Ferdinand School, the Religious Education Program and, for the Polish liturgies, from the Polish Catholic Saturday School beginning at the end of 3rd grade. Lectors The lector is entrusted with the crucial task of proclaiming the Word of God at Mass. Good public speaking is an art that requires training and practice. These skills include effective use of a microphone, careful enunciation, proper posture and movement. The lector must have the ability to convey human emotions vocally, to gain and keep the attention of the people listening, and the capability to convey enthusiasm as he/she proclaims the Word of God. Training takes place at St. Ferdinand. Anyone interested in becoming a lector should call the Parish Office and leave their name and phone number with the secretary. You will be contacted by the coordinator of lectors for the English Masses or the coordinator of lectors for the Polish Masses. Ministers of Eucharist The primary responsibility of the Minister of the Eucharist is to assist the priest at all the Masses in distributing Holy Communion to the assembly. Ministers of the Eucharist must be at least 18 years of age, must be fully initiated and practicing Roman Catholics, must be approved by the parish staff, and then receive training at St. Ferdinand. Anyone interested in learning more about ministers of the Eucharist should contact the Parish Office and leave their name and phone number with the secretary. You will be contacted by the coordinator for the English speaking or Polish speaking Ministers of the Eucharist at Mass. Ushers The Ushers welcome people attending Mass and other religious services. They help in seating, provide assistance when and where needed, take up the collection, and direct the Communion procession. The Ushers assist at other parish functions as needed. Business/Social/Fellowship meetings are held monthly. Meeting dates, times and location are always announced in the parish bulletin; generally, the monthly meeting is at 8:00 p.m. on the second Friday of each month in Heeney Hall. Anyone interested in becoming an Usher or joining the Men's Club should leave a message at the Parish Office, or attend one of the monthly meetings. Women are welcome to join in this ministry.
- Wedding Music | St Ferdinand Chicago
Wedding Music About Wedding Music St Ferdinand Church is one of the parishes which allow their parishioners to choose a musician for their wedding. The most important goal of liturgical music is to help people pray. Musical selections should express not only the faith of the couple, but also the common faith of the whole Church regarding the Sacrament of Marriage. It is for this reason that secular music is NOT appropriate during the wedding ceremony. Music should be Scripturally-based, simple, and singable so that those assembled may actively participate. Below, you will find a list of music pieces that can be performed during wedding ceremony. Please send your selections by e-mail to our music director or call in order to give your list. The list presented below is not a complete list of wedding music. If you would like other music to be performed during the Mass, please contact our director of music. Additionally, we strongly recommend hiring one of our cantors who will not only perform "Ave Maria" or "Panis Angelicus" but will sing throughout the whole mass adding a festive, special, and unforgettable dimension to the wedding ceremony.
